Vancouver-based General Fusion to go public in first-of-its-kind fusion energy deal (2026)

General Fusion, a Vancouver-based company, is set to make waves in the energy sector with its groundbreaking fusion energy deal. This British Columbia-based firm has announced its plans to go public through a merger with Spring Valley Acquisition Corp. III, marking a significant milestone in the fusion power industry. If successful, General Fusion will become the first publicly traded company dedicated solely to fusion power, with the ambitious goal of making fusion energy a practical and conventional source of electricity.

The deal, expected to close in mid-2026, will place General Fusion on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol GFUZ, valuing the company at approximately US$1 billion (C$1.4 billion). This transaction includes funding from both Spring Valley’s existing cash reserves and new private investors. Founded in 2002, General Fusion has been at the forefront of developing a method to produce energy by fusing atoms together, the same process that powers the sun.

Despite recent technological advancements, fusion has faced challenges in achieving commercial-scale viability. General Fusion’s innovative approach, using magnetized target fusion technology, offers a more accessible and cost-effective solution. Their Lawson Machine 26 (LM26) is a testament to this, operating at the research hub at Vancouver International Airport. This machine is roughly half the size of what a commercial power system would require and is designed to squeeze super-hot gas, known as plasma, with liquid metal to trigger fusion reactions.

The company's focus on magnetized target fusion technology avoids the complex and expensive equipment used by other fusion projects, making it a more viable option for commercial use. With the funding from the public listing, General Fusion aims to further improve the machine and demonstrate its ability to generate usable electricity. CEO Greg Twinney emphasizes the company's 20-year track record in advancing fusion technologies, addressing the urgent need for clean and sustainable energy.

However, the path to fusion energy commercialization is not without challenges. General Fusion had previously raised over US$400 million (C$550 million) from investors, including Jeff Bezos, and industry partners. They also received government funding in Canada and the UK, where they plan to build a demonstration plant at 70% of the scale needed for commercialization. Construction on the UK project was set to begin in 2023, but was later put on hold due to additional costs and a smaller trial to bridge the gap.

The success of the LM26 machine at the Vancouver facility will determine the fate of the larger-scale UK project. General Fusion holds over 200 patents related to its technology, showcasing its commitment to innovation. Spring Valley Acquisition Corp. III, an energy and clean-technology investment firm, believes in General Fusion's potential, stating that fusion will play a key role in our future energy demands.

As the world's energy needs continue to rise, driven by technological advancements like battery-electric vehicles and artificial intelligence, General Fusion's fusion energy deal presents a promising solution. The company's dedication to innovation and its unique approach to fusion technology make it a pivotal player in the transition to a sustainable and clean energy future.
