Tragedy struck at a ski resort in northern Japan when a five-year-old boy lost his life after his arm became trapped in a moving travelator. This heartbreaking incident involved the young victim, Hinata Goto, who was enjoying a family skiing trip in Otaru, located on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido.
Hinata's fatal accident occurred on Sunday, when he fell while attempting to exit the 30-meter-long walkway that connects the resort’s parking area with the ski slope. Reports from local media indicate that his right arm became caught in the mechanism of the travelator, leading to unconsciousness. It took firefighters approximately 40 minutes to rescue him after his mother made an emergency call. Sadly, despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Hinata hailed from Sapporo, a nearby city, and his tragic fate has raised serious concerns about the safety features of the travelator. The Asahi Shimbun highlighted that this particular ski escalator, designed to ease the ascent for skiers, measures only 60 centimeters in width and lacks handrails, which many critics argue is inadequate.
Additionally, the safety mechanism intended to halt the escalator in case of an obstruction apparently failed to operate when Hinata's mother pressed the emergency stop button. Initial inspections earlier that day had confirmed that the mechanism functioned properly. Alarmingly, it was reported that no staff members were present near the travelator at the time of the accident.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, a representative from the Asari ski resort issued an apology, while local authorities have initiated an investigation. This inquiry could potentially lead to charges of professional negligence resulting in death.
A regular visitor to the resort, a man in his seventies, described the travelator as "scary," noting that the fluctuations in the slope's angle made the conveyor belt unstable. He personally experienced difficulties while using it. Another individual working near the resort expressed concern, stating, "Many children use the resort to practice skiing. I hope there will be a thorough investigation and necessary measures to prevent such incidents from happening again."
