The UK's Rapid Growth in Public Charging Stations: Over 14,000 New Stations! (2026)

Imagine a future where electric vehicles (EVs) seamlessly integrate into our daily lives, and charging them is as easy as finding a gas station today. Well, that future is rapidly becoming a reality, and the numbers don't lie!

In a groundbreaking development, Great Britain has witnessed the installation of over 14,000 new public charging stations, a testament to the country's commitment to a greener and more sustainable future. But here's where it gets controversial...

Zapmap, a leading charge point mapping service in the UK, has been tracking these developments closely. They've made a clear distinction between 'charging points' (individual connectors) and 'charging devices' (complete stations), which has sparked some interesting debates.

According to Zapmap's database, there were an impressive 87,796 charging stations at 45,033 locations across Great Britain at the end of the year. These stations are equipped with a total of 116,052 EVSEs (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), and the number of connectors adds up to a whopping 122,071!

The growth in charging infrastructure is particularly strong in the ultra-fast category, with stations capable of at least 150 kW. Zapmap reports a remarkable 41% increase in these 'ultra-rapid charge points', bringing the total to 9,893. Stations with capacities between 50 and 149 kW, classified as 'rapid', have also seen an 8% increase, reaching 8,042 stations.

And this is the part most people miss: Zapmap has grouped the 'slow' and 'fast' categories together, and AC chargers now dominate with 69,861 units, an increase of 18% from the previous year.

The number of charging hubs, defined as sites with at least six 'rapid' or 'ultra-rapid' charging points, has also seen a significant rise. With 211 new locations, there are now 748 hubs, marking a substantial 39% increase.

The regional distribution of high-power charger growth is varied. The North West has experienced an impressive 35% year-on-year growth in these powerful chargers, while the East of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland have all recorded around 29% growth in this power band.

Zapmap, founded in 2014, has played a pivotal role in simplifying the search and navigation for charging points. Today, their app not only helps users locate charging stations but also allows them to initiate and pay for charging sessions.

As we embrace the electric revolution, these developments are a step towards a cleaner and more sustainable tomorrow. But what do you think? Is the growth in charging infrastructure enough to encourage widespread EV adoption? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
