Hallam Reflects on the Golden Age of SVG: A Racing Odyssey
Steve Hallam, a veteran in the racing industry, reminisces about his time as General Manager of Tekno Autosports, particularly his collaboration with the legendary Shane van Gisbergen. This period stands as a pinnacle in Hallam's illustrious career, marked by a string of remarkable achievements.
Hallam's journey began with a prestigious stint in Formula 1, working with iconic teams like Team Lotus and McLaren, alongside renowned drivers such as Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet, Gerhard Berger, Mika Hakkinen, Fernando Alonso, and Lewis Hamilton. His passion for racing led him to the United States, where he joined Michael Waltrip Racing in NASCAR.
In 2012-13, Hallam relocated to Australia to lead Walkinshaw Racing/Holden Racing Team, a move that proved to be a turning point. His partnership with van Gisbergen at Tekno Autosports was nothing short of extraordinary. Despite facing challenges on low-grip tracks like Perth, the team secured seven championship wins, three non-championship victories, and consistently finished second and fourth in consecutive championships, all achieved as a single-car squad.
Hallam's reflections on the Dinner with Racers Podcast reveal the essence of this success: "In '14 and '15, working with Shane, I ran the team with a small but dedicated crew of ten or eleven people. It was an exhilarating two years, the best racing I've ever experienced. Shane was an exceptional driver, incredibly fast, and we had a tight-knit team."
