Get ready, Perth, because the heat is on! We're about to experience a scorching heatwave that will make this school holiday period even more memorable. But here's the kicker: it's not just a regular heatwave; it's a 40-degree scorcher!
Parents, who were hoping for a break from the sweltering heat, will have to brace themselves for another round. The forecast predicts a three-day heatwave, starting on Monday, with temperatures climbing to a maximum of 35°C. But wait, it gets worse (or better, depending on your perspective)! Tuesday is expected to peak at a scorching 41°C, making it the hottest day since Christmas.
And this is the part most people miss: the heat doesn't just disappear overnight. Minimum temperatures are predicted to stay above 23°C from Tuesday onwards, which could make for some uncomfortable evenings and nights across the city.
The Bureau of Meteorology defines a heatwave as three consecutive days of temperatures reaching or exceeding 35°C. So, by this definition, we're in for a proper heatwave experience.
If the forecast for Tuesday holds true, Perth will have experienced its fourth 40°C day since March. That's a lot of heat to handle!
The sunny conditions are expected to resemble those of Christmas Day, when Perth hit a whopping 42.1°C. Not only did Perth become the hottest place on Earth that day, but it also broke a four-year record for the city.
Low-intensity heatwave conditions are predicted until Wednesday, after which some areas of the city and the South West are expected to face severe heatwave conditions. The Bureau has yet to issue a formal heatwave warning for Perth next week, but severe warnings remain in place for other regions, such as the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, and Southern Interior, where temperatures are already in the 40s.
The Northern Interior has been issued an extreme heatwave warning, with the Bureau highlighting areas like Kiwirrkurra and Newman as likely to be affected. They've emphasized the dangers of extreme heatwaves, especially for vulnerable populations like older adults, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and those with medical conditions.
So, while we can expect a relatively cool weekend, with temperatures dropping to a minimum of 15°C on Sunday, the heat is definitely on the horizon. Here's a breakdown of the forecast for the coming week:
