M5 and M6 Interchange Delays: Hour-Long Queues After Crash (2026)

Traffic on the M5 and M6 interchange is currently bogged down, with drivers facing painfully long delays due to a recent accident.

As of now, lanes one and two on the northbound M5 are shut down between Junction 1 and Junction 8 of the M6 as authorities work to recover vehicles involved in a multi-car pileup. Motorists should prepare for significant wait times, with reports indicating potential queues lasting up to an hour.

This unfortunate incident reportedly involves a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and two passenger cars. Emergency services are on-site attending to the situation, but details regarding any injuries have not yet been released.

According to National Highways West Midlands, the closure is necessary for vehicle recovery and cleanup operations: "Lanes 1 and 2 remain CLOSED on the #M5 northbound between J1 #WESTBROMWICH and #M6 J8 for vehicle recovery and clear-up works following a multi-vehicle collision. There are currently delays of 60 minutes on approach to the incident.”

Traffic monitoring service Inrix confirmed: "Two lanes blocked and severe delays due to accident on M5 Northbound from J1 A4252 Kenrick Way (West Bromwich / Birmingham) to the M6 Interchange." However, there is some hope; normal traffic conditions are anticipated to resume between 8:45 PM and 9:00 PM, according to updates from motorway cameras.
