Highlights include a tour jacket worn by Lenny Henry during his 1984 tour, a signed pair of Rik Mayall's underpants—yes, you read that right—and Joe Lycett's quirky Late Night Lycett teddy suit. Andy Hollingsworth, the mastermind behind these photographs, shares, "This retrospective of my work over the past three decades reflects how UK comedy has transformed over time and illustrates my evolving relationship with its brightest stars." He also expresses his pride in showcasing this work in Birmingham, a city renowned not only for its vibrant cultural scene but also for producing and nurturing many influential comedians. Birmingham hosts the UK's second-longest-running comedy festival, which underscores the city's significant contribution to the comedy landscape.
Supporting this, Zak Mensah and Sara Wajid, the co-chief executives of Birmingham Museums Trust, emphasize the local importance of the exhibition. They point out that it highlights multiple generations of Birmingham comedians, celebrating the region's ongoing influence on popular humor. Items connected to prominent venues like Birmingham Hippodrome, Birmingham Odeon, and Wolverhampton's Wulfrun and Civic Halls are also featured, showcasing how North Warwickshire contributes to the wider cultural fabric.
